Willie Carr and was it Ernie Hunt?

Until they got relegated, Coventry had a very long time in the top tier.

I think they were third or fourth for being there continuously, behind Everton and Arsenal, of course, and maybe one other.

50 years??

How does that work out? SKY reckon football started in 1992!

Back in the day when they had Willie Carr and that other bloke who did that fancy free kick that got banned, Coventry were a regular in the top flight

Just saw that it was based on league peformaces. Point still stands about Coventry though. Considering they have spent the last 15 years of that period outside the top division.

Re: West Ham are the 10th most successful team in the last 50 years
Last 30 years we would be lower.

Not quite sure what Sky's rationale for putting Coventry in there though? 1 FA Cup in 1987 I think, in that time? Plus a couple of relegations and results being affected by severe financial problems, the club not being able to play at their own ground, and the club almost folding.

Because Swiss, as been mentioned numerous times it's based on the LEAGUE performance. It's a LEAGUE table.

I assume it's based on a combination of how we have progressed in cups and in the league as well as league and cup trophies actually won.

Re: West Ham are the 10th most successful team in the last 50 years
We're 11th in total number of points gained in the Premier league. Pretty much any criteria you use to judge the size of a club (attendance, etc.) puts us about 10th-12th.

Makes a mockery of those who seem to think that without the current board and manager we would and should be plying our trade in a lower division.

Re: West Ham are the 10th most successful team in the last 50 years
There's probably a good 10 or so clubs that have won more than us over the past 50 years...

Can't be much more than that, surprisingly... And that's with us underachieving in the most part with some of the players that we've had at times...

Re: West Ham are the 10th most successful team in the last 50 years
It's about winning trophies.

Simple as that.

So the league is arbitrary bollocks.

Pretty pointless really.

Football has changed hugely in recent years, trying to judge a team's performance historically up to today is a waste of time.

Re: West Ham are the 10th most successful team in the last 50 years
This isn't that surprising. A while ago, I decided to have a look at our record since I began going (1962-3) until the end of 2012-13(so, 51 seasons), mainly to prove to myself that we should not, as some pundits seem to think, be eternally grateful just to be in the Premiership.
I made it that in that time we have been out of the top division for only 9 seasons, and suffered 5 relegations; and since the PL was formed spent 4 seasons out of the division and IN the PL had 9 top-ten finishes (out of 17).

Re: West Ham are the 10th most successful team in the last 50 years
We've won more cups over the last 50 years than Newcastle...

Below us; Leeds and Forest have won more than us...

We've won more cups than all there other teams below us though in that time...

Still, I guess who really gives a fuck to be honest...

Bollocks to it...
